MLS U22 Initiative: A Balancing Act in Recruitment Rrocess.
Given the recent MLS roster guideline change of ‘decoupling’ the Under 22 Initiative slots from the Designated Player mechanism, the summer transfer window will be critical for many teams aiming to bolster playoff chances whilst maintaining squad balance, competition and succession planning. As of May 1st 2024, an estimated 64 Under 22 Initiative players were rostered in the league, with acquisition fees averaging around $2.7m. Conservatively, there are 15 open international slots currently floating around MLS with an estimated 30 Under 22 slots available over the 29 teams. How to spend and where to spend has always been fundamental to success within the complex web of MLS budget regulations, but with over 60 international players ending their guaranteed MLS contracts in December 2024 [and therefore international slots becoming more readily accessible on the trade market] do teams take advantage of the increased flexibility in discretionary U22 spend this summer or wait until the winter transfer window, when historically recruitment can be more complex in European markets?
